Wakaliga accident survivors out of danger

Tuesday, 14th January 2014
Attendants watch over Anita Akampurira, one of the accident survivors, at Mulago Hospital yesterday

Eight survivors of the Wakaliga accident which claimed the lives of eight people on Sunday are now out of danger, Mulago hospital spokesperson Enock Kusasira has said.

The two, who sustained minor injuries, were treated and discharged yesterday after the doctors confirmed that they had not sustained any internal or serious physical injuries. Mr Kusasira told the Daily Monitor that the six, most of who suffered head injuries and multiple fractures, have now recovered from the critical stage.

Surgery
?We have so far done surgery on two and others are lined up for surgery by the end of the day. The doctors are doing their best and we are certain that they will survive because they have responded well to the treatment so far given,? he said.

The six admitted include Mr Willy Mugamba, 30, a third year student of Makerere University, Mr Amdan Ntegede, a casual labourer operating in Nateete and Mr Faiswal Muyonga. Others are Ms Anita Akampurira, a student, Ms Teopista Nakubulwa and Mr Hassan Wamala.

However, Ms Nakiyinga Babirye, the mother of Ntegede, said her son, despite having head injuries that affected one of his eyes, had not been checked on because they failed to raise the Shs120,000 needed for the CT scan. ?The fractures have been taken care of but now we have no money to do the CT scan. We need help from good Samaritans? she said.

The accident claimed eight people and left several others injured following a head-on collision between two motor vehicles at Wakaliga, a Kampala suburb, on Mengo-Nateete road, according to the police report.

According to eye witnesses, a truck carrying coffeefrom Mengo to Masaka District failed to brake and crashed into a commuter taxi that had passengers travelling to Kampala.
They said in a desperate attempt to save lives, the truck driver swerved back to his lane, knocking dead a boda boda cyclist who was carrying a passenger with a child.
